Create a PayPal Account for Selling on eBay

Though there are other ways to get paid when selling on eBay, PayPal is clearly the best option for new sellers. PayPal enables you to:

  • Get paid using standard eBay workflows that all shoppers understand
  • Accept payments without additional configuration or learning
  • Access funds from your payments relatively quickly

Creating a PayPal Business Account

To create and configure a PayPal account for eBay sales, perform the following steps.

  1. Visit www.paypal.com and click Sign Up at the upper-right of the page.

  2. Select "Business Account" to indicate that your PayPal account is for online sales.*

  3. Select the free "Payments Standard" account type.

  4. Provide the email address that will be connected with this account.

  5. Select a password to use when logging in to this account.

  6. Complete the business information form. You are free to use your own name and address to start; you do not need to have a separate business name or address.

  7. Accept the user agreement and privacy policy.

  8. Click "Agree and Create Account" to create the account.

  9. Select the type of business that you operate. For sellers just starting out, "Individual/Sole Proprietorship" is the most common option.

  10. Select a business category, subcategory, and estimated monthly sales. These  are used to profile your business and are not critical or final; select the most likely choices.

  11. If you have a website, enter your website's address in the "Business URL" field.

  12. Provide any identifying details that PayPal requests. These may include ID numbers, home address, date of birth, or other similar items.**

  13. When asked how you want to accept payments, select the "On eBay" option.

  14. Click the "Account setup" tab, then complete the steps to confirm your email address, link your bank account***, configure your business name, and get a PayPal debit card.****

* Creating a Business account, which is free, gives you access to eBay's "require immediate payment" feature and to seller protection against fraudulent transactions. Note that existing PayPal Personal accounts can be converted into Business accounts; contact PayPal for details.

** This information is required to enable PayPal to protect its service against use in money laundering or other illegal activities; it is not used for marketing purposes or shared with third parties.

*** A linked bank account enables you to transfer your funds from PayPal to your own financial services.

**** A PayPal debit card enables you to ramp your business more quickly, using your eBay sales income directly to source shipping supplies, additional inventory, and so on, without waiting for bank transfers.
