Research Your First Product or Item

Here's how to run your first search—to see what a product sells for right now on eBay.

Start the Product Research Tool

To start the Product Research tool where you'll have access to all of this data, follow these steps.

  1. Visit sell.terapeak.com and log in to Terapeak.

  2. Click Research -> Product Research 2.0 to start the Product Research 2.0 tool.

After starting the tool, you'll see the Product Research 2.0 search box, where you can search for a product and study years of sales data and trends related to it.

Enter Search Terms for a Product, then Click "Search"

To run your first search, enter very basic search terms. A product make and model are usually the best places to start.* Some examples might include:

  • Apple iPad Mini 2
  • Levi's 501
  • Mavic XM319 Rim
  • DeWalt DCF899B

Each of these phrases represents a specific product—a tablet, a clothing item, a bicycle rim, and a power tool—that is available to online shoppers.

* As you become more familiar with Terapeak, you'll learn to add more terms to your searches to help you to narrow your research to particular sizes or variations of products, as well as to make use of other power search techniques. For a first search, however, a make and model is enough to get a great start with Terapeak.

Tailor Your Results

Now it's time to tailor your search results to deliver the data you're searching for. Recall that for this exercise, you're searching for a product's current value on eBay.

Terapeak offers years of sales data on every variation and condition for a product—so to get the current value of a specific item in your inventory, you'll want to narrow the results just a bit. Here's how.

  1. Select a date range for your search. To see the current value of a product, selecting the most recent 30 days of sales is usually the best bet.

  2. Click "Apply" in the date range selector to narrow your search to include only sales on the dates you selected.

  3. Click the "Filters" button to filter your search. For now, focus on the Product Condition filters and select either "New" (if you're looking for new item pricing) or "Used" (if you're looking for used item pricing).

  4. Click "Apply" in the filters dialog to narrow your search to include only sales involving items in the condition you specified.

You've now tailored your search to include only the most recent sales data—so that the prices you'll see will be reflective of the product's current value, rather than it's value in the past—and to include only items in the same condition as your inventory item.

Survey the Sales Metrics You See

Now that your search has been tailored to meet your needs for this search, check the values shown in the metrics boxes farther down the page.

These metrics are assembled using actual listing and sales data for the product you searched for, in the condition you specified, over the time period you selected. They include:

  • Sell Through — The sell-through rate for listings offering this product to shoppers. This figure is the percentage of listings that are known to have resulted in a sale.

  • Number of Sellers — The number of competing sellers that that sold this product to shoppers over the time period in question.

  • Average Price — The average sale price (average amount paid by shoppers) for completed sales over the time period in question.

  • Items Sold — The number of individual units for this product that were sold over the time period in question.

  • Total Sales — The total combined value of all sales of this product that were made over the time period in question.

  • Shipping Average / Free % — The average amount paid by shoppers to have their order shipped when shipping was not free (left-side figure) and the percentage of sales in which buyers paid no shipping costs because shipping was free (right-side figure).

These metrics tell you virtually everything that you need to know as an online seller about a product's value, supply levels, demand levels, and sales competition levels.

With these results shown, you can continue to use the Filters dialog and the date range selector to adjust for particular contexts and periods of sales data—these key metrics automatically update each time you apply a new set of filters or dates to the search.

Study Individual Listings

Scroll further down the page and select the "Transactions" tab to see all of the actual listings—and related transactions—that were included when calculating sales metrics.

For each listing, you'll see the:

  • Listing tile that resulted in sale(s)
  • eBay item ID for the listing
  • ID of the seller that offered the listing (partially obscured to protect privacy)
  • Format of the listing
  • Number of bids that were placed (zero if not an auction-format listing)
  • Average sale price for items in the listing
  • Number of items sold through the listing
  • Total value of sales made through the listing
  • Average shipping cost for purchases made through the listing
  • Date of the most recent sale

You can click on the column headers to sort the list of transactions by a particular kind of data. Click a second time on any single column to reverse the sort order.

You can also click on any listing title in the list to view the original listing on eBay.

Seeing Trends, Competitors, and Related Hot Items

Since this article is intended to quickly help you to run your first search, we won't get into details about the other tabs available to you in Product Research 2.0 results, but each tab does bear at least a mention here:

  • Unsold Listings — Select this tab to see listings for your search from the time period that did not result in sales or that have not yet resulted in sales.

  • Trends — Select this tab to see sales trends for your search (increasing or decreasing prices, unit volume, or sales volume) over the time period in question, charted visually.

  • Sellers — Select this tab to see a list of the sellers that made sales matching your search over the time period in question, along with key metrics for each seller. These sellers are your competition to sell the item you've searched for.

  • Inventory Ideas — Select this tab to see a list of the top other products that were sold by the sellers shown in the Sellers tab over the time period in question. These products are other products that are likely to be a part of your product niche and that are performing well on eBay.
